Geography

“What is our knowledge worth if we know nothing about the world that sustains us, nothing about natural systems and climate, nothing about other countries and cultures”

Jonathon Porritt - Forum for the Future

Our geographical studies aim to develop the children's understanding of places, the human and physical processes that shape them, and the people who live in them. Geographical knowledge and skills are gained through carefully planned topics that are also designed to make pupils more aware of their environment. Local studies help to develop a sense of identity and comparisons are made with life and conditions in other parts of the UK and abroad.

The children learn how to use maps, atlases, globes and compasses and how to identify features in the landscape. They also learn about wider environmental issues concerning natural resources and population distribution.

History

The teaching of history aims to stimulate and foster an interest in the past. A variety of opportunities are provided for children to investigate historical resources such as documents, objects and photographs. We teach them how to extract information from archive material, using both the school and local libraries and the internet for their research. Projects often include visits to historical sites and museums.

Computer programs, rôle play and talking to adults about their memories of the past all help to bring the subject to life.

Our studies progress from familiar situations and local history to that of a more distant time, encouraging a sense of chronology and developing the ability to compare and assess different lifestyles in terms of work, leisure, culture, clothes and homes.

Art

For most children art is a natural form of expression and a source of great pleasure.Work is planned throughout the school to enable children to enjoy the experience of art whilst developing visual perception and practical skills, particularly eye/hand co-ordination, accurate observation and perseverance.

The children investigate and communicate their ideas using a variety of different media, including pencil, pen, charcoal, pastel, paint, collage, inks, textiles and clay. Emphasis is placed on producing work of high quality, which will be attractively displayed in the school in a variety of ways. Art forms from many different times and cultures are explored. The children learn to appreciate each other's work as well as that of famous artists.
