Music

“Music is the most universal of all the arts. Ask any person in any city in any country what their favourite music is, and they’ll always have an answer. So treasure music and keep it with you always.”

John Suchet - Newscaster

We encourage a love of music and enjoyment of it in many ways, by playing, listening, creating and performing. In the early years, the children are introduced to music mainly through singing and movement. They explore sounds and rhythms by playing and listening. As they progress through the school they have the opportunity to play the recorder and various percussion instruments. They learn to read musical notation, to improvise and to compose tunes in groups for performance. We arrange for the children to hear live music and to perform in music and drama productions.

Physical Education

“Physical education is about pupils learning about themselves: their capabilities, their potential and their limitations. It is the foundation of all sports participation. But it goes beyond the individual and understanding themselves – it’s learning how to work with and to respect others.”

Lucy Pearson - England Cricketer and Teacher

The promotion of healthy physical development is an important part of a child’s education, not only in terms of individual fitness but also through experience of teamwork, co–operation and endeavour. The children take part in dance, gymnastics, games, athletics, swimming and outdoor activities.

Netball and football matches are played against local schools during the season and we enter a Kwik Cricket tournament in the summer term. The whole school takes part in a sports day in July.We also participate in tournaments organised for the Melbourn Village College feeder primary schools. The children are expected to participate in games and PE unless there are special reasons for exemption. It is important that the correct kit is brought to school on the appropriate days.
