Health Issues

Illness

Please do not send your child to school if he/she is obviously unwell, both for the benefit of your child and the rest of the school community. On the first day of illness, please notify school as soon as possible and send a written note of explanation on the child’s return after more than one day’s absence. In particular we need to be aware of any infectious disease. We recommend that anyone suffering from sickness and diarrhoea should stay at home for at least 24 hours after the symptoms have stopped.

Head Lice

This is an extremely common problem and we ask all parents to be vigilant. The school nurse is available for advice on this and any other child health problems via the Melbourn Surgery (Tel: 01763 260220)

First Aid

Most of our Learning Support Assistants are qualified first aiders and we have a written policy for first aid and accident procedure. We will contact you if we consider that a child needs to be taken home or requires further medical treatment. A ‘sad face’ note will be issued if we need to inform you of a minor injury that your child has suffered at school.

Asthma/ Severe Allergies/ Chronic medical conditions

We maintain a register of children with asthma or potentially serious allergies. All staff are aware of the procedure for dealing with an asthma attack. Asthmatics must have an inhaler with them at school. Please tell us if your child has any other condition of which we should be aware. Medicines We appreciate that children may be attending school whilst taking a course of medicine. The following instructions are taken from our Health & Safety Policy in respect of this matter.

Non–prescribed medicines (over the counter remedies):

• Staff will not administer these.

Prescribed medicines

• You should endeavour to time doses to be administered at home or arrange to come into school to administer the medicine yourself

• If this is not possible, you must complete the relevant form from the Administration Office giving details of the medicine and its administration. (i.e. Only if medicines need to be administered more than 3 times daily.)

• You must ensure the medicine is clearly labelled with the child's name.

• A qualified first-aider will be responsible for the storage and administration of any medicines during school hours.

• You must collect the medicine at the end of each day.
