Sex Education

Human growth and reproduction are a statutory part of the Science curriculum and are taught in ways appropriate to the age and maturity of the children. Other curricular areas provide opportunities to cover related issues such as families, development of self–esteem, interpersonal and communication skills. Every two years a Health Education Week is held during which visiting experts help cover topics such as nutrition, hygiene and dental care. As part of this programme of events the school nurse assists with the topic of puberty for Classes 3 & 4 separately, plus reproduction for Class 4.

We aim to equip children to be correctly informed, not to be puzzled or afraid by situations they may meet in their lives and above all to keep themselves safe.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from specific sex education which is not a part of the National Curriculum. Please ask if you would like to see or discuss our sex education policy or the resources used.

Homework

Homework is not necessarily a set task to be completed and marked. Any activity done out of school hours that enhances learning may be classed as homework e.g. parent and child sharing a book, watching a TV programme related to the class topic, finding a holiday destination on a map, as well as more conventional worksheets and learning spellings. The most important factor is that the benefit of homework is significantly enhanced by parental support and involvement. Homework set by school is mainly literacy and numeracy but other curriculum subjects may be included, particularly for older children. Projects will also be set, to be completed over a longer period.

The class information sheet, issued at the start of each academic year, will give you details about the type of homework your child will receive, when it will be set, how long to spend on it and when it should be returned/completed.We expect parents and children to take responsibility for returning homework on the set day – staff will not chase up or mark homework that is late. You will also receive a ‘handy hints’ sheet with advice on making the process of doing homework easier. Each academic year there will be an evening meeting devoted to either numeracy or literacy to explain current teaching and how you can assist your child.
